While the intersection of fat liberation and parenting can be an amazing counter-cultural, anti-oppression practice, it can also feel like a lonely place.

But you're not alone and you deserve community.

I searched high and low for a group like this and couldn’t find one, so I decided to create it! Fat Parent Connections is an opportunity to gather with other fat parents; receive and lend support; and share the joys & challenges of raising resilient children.

The group is facilitated by me, Laurie Ganberg, LICSW. I’m a fat therapist, group facilitator, and parent, but this group isn’t therapy. It's a chance to create community with other fat parents who value raising kids to trust their bodies, free from diet-culture and anti-fat bias. And you can join from anywhere!

Logistics

  • This group meets over zoom

  • For parents of all genders who identify as fat*

  • Stay tuned for 2025 dates and details - sign up for the newsletter below to get the latest news!

* This group is just for fat parents (small fat and larger), though you don't need to identify with these specific labels. There are so few spaces that are exclusively for fat folks, I want this to be one of them.

FAQs

What’s the difference between the Connections group and the Workshops?

There are two main differences. The Fat Liberation Parenting workshop includes some “teaching” and information sharing from me; the Connections group is facilitated by me but is a time of community building and sharing. There might be overlap in both directions, but I primarily think of the Workshop as a learning event and the Connections group as a connecting event. The other important difference is that the Connections group is only for fat parents and caregivers. The workshop is open to folks of all sizes who are parenting.

Why is the Connections group limited to fat parents?

Being in community with other fat and larger bodied folks is such a unique and expansive experience. The opportunity to create this space for fat parents is a privilege and joy for me.
